Thy Neighbors Farm-Solar Powered Winter Watering Solution
Solar Powered Winter Watering Solution is a collaborative project between the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME) teams at UConn, developed for Thy Neighbors Farm in Torrington, Connecticut. The farm, owned by Steven Thompson, raises sheep that require clean, unfrozen drinking water throughout the winter. Currently, the farmer must make repeated trips transporting unfrozen water from his home to wherever the sheep are grazing, which is inefficient, labor‑intensive, and unsustainable especially because the grazing location changes frequently and requires a portable solution. This project aims to design and build a solar‑powered, portable winter watering system that prevents water from freezing while remaining reliable, low maintenance, and easy to relocate as the sheep move across the property. This is the first year Thy Neighbors Farm has partnered with UConn to develop such a solution.
Our team collaborated with Mechanical Engineering 53 on this project.
