Damping AM Parts with Entrapped Residue (DAMPER)

Aerospace components must withstand shock, random and periodic vibration inputs from a variety of sources, and the resulting fatigue can limit component reliability, particularly given the reduced fatigue strength capability of as-built PBF-LB (Powder Bed Fusion by Laser Beam) surfaces. Passive vibration control techniques can attenuate transmission of the dynamics through a structure. The PBF-LB process builds parts in a layer-wise fashion by locally solidifying metal powder; and then afterwards, one generally removes the entrapped power. However, leaving powder in internal cavities will allow particle damping, which represents an effective means of vibration attenuation. For example, Onome et. al. (2021) found an unfused volume of 1-4% led to a vibration amplitude reduction of 88-95% compared to solid counterparts.
