Adapting DePuy Synthes Suture Anchor Inserter for Use in the Brostrom Procedure
The purpose of this design project is to evaluate the HEALIX ADVANCE family of suture anchors that are currently on the market through DePuy Synthes, and adapt for use by surgeons in the foot and ankle for the Brostrom procedure. The current family of HEALIX ADVANCE suture anchors on the market are not well suited for surgeries on the foot and ankle, nor are they as easy and convenient to use compared to competitors. This project consists of designing and manufacturing a new suture anchor inserter through 3D printing and the use of manufacturing machines. After brainstorming alternative designs for the new inserter, a final prototype was produced. Based on the original design, the inserter’s shaft was shortened and two side grooves were added on either side. This new design, with a shorter shaft and features that are compatible with sutures with pre-attached needles, is more suitable for being used in the Brostrom procedure.
