A 9x5x2ft CO2 laser gantry robot was created to cut large sheets of cardboard for packaging. To complete this task, the gantry was modeled in SolidWorks and constructed using aluminum extrusions in addition to some custom machined and 3D printed components. A 90W CO2 laser was selected and mounted to the frame. A rack and pinion drive which utilized stepper motors was integrated to the system with a controller. Finally mirror alignment was performed resulting in a working product that is currently cutting cardboard.
