Hybrid Composite Metal Case Design

Our goal for this project is to work with Pratt and Whitney to develop a method of joining a flat composite section of an engine fan case to the metal upturn flange. Pervious composite designs lacked load carrying capability in 90 degree bends. Using a hybrid method will net weight savings from composite materials in the majority of the fan case, and retain the strength of metal in the in the upturned flange section.

Our team collaborated with Materials Science & Engineering 8 on this project.
