Intersection Safety and Improvement Project in Suffield, CT
This project evaluates safety and operational issues at the intersection of Route 168 (Mountain Road) and North and South Stone Street in Suffield, Connecticut. Due to limited sight distance, geometric constraints, and a high number of angle crashes, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) identified the intersection as a safety concern. The study analyzes traffic volumes, roadway conditions, and five years of crash data, which showed that most collisions occur when vehicles from Stone Street attempt to enter or cross Route 168. Several improvement alternatives were evaluated, including a four-way stop, traffic signal, roundabout, and a no-build option. After comparing safety, operational performance, and feasibility, the project selected a single-lane roundabout as the preferred solution because it reduces conflict points, lowers vehicle speeds, and significantly improves overall intersection safety.
