East Main Street Corridor Improvements
East Main Street, between Scott Road and Pierpont Road, is a heavily travelled east-west arterial roadway in the east end of Waterbury. It closely parallels I-84, and the development is a mix of residential and commercial. There is a history of fatal and serious injury crashes throughout this corridor, particularly for vulnerable road users. There is a lack of sidewalk and pedestrian facilities despite there being services and schools along the route which attract pedestrians. There are also a number of unsignalized intersections that don’t work well, and poor performance at the signalized intersections of Scott Road and Pierpont Road. The scope of this project is to obtain available data, review existing roadway geometry and features, perform traffic, roadway geometry and safety analyses, and make recommendations for improvements such as short-term, mid-term and long-term, to include cost estimates. The City of Waterbury, with the assistance of the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments has been systematically addressing sections of the entire East Main Street corridor from Route 8 to the I-84/Route 70 Interchange for many years. There are completed sections as well as sections currently under design and in construction. The City of Waterbury has been continuously pursuing funding to bring the entirety of East Main Street up to modern design standards to ensure a safe and vibrant roadway which is vital to the community. This study will help the City of Waterbury to bring this section of East Main Street to the forefront of the development process.
