Assessing the Influence of Process Gas and Heat Treatment on Cold Sprayed Metals

Coatings produced by the cold spray deposition process are typically brittle in the as-sprayed state due to the severe plastic deformation upon impact. VRC Metal Systems aims to optimize process gases and post-processing treatments to improve the material properties of varying coating systems. This research explores the effects of process gases and heat treatment methods on the properties of copper (Cu), copper-62% nickel-38% (Cu-116), and Stainless Steel 304/304L deposits, with a particular emphasis on changes in ductility and porosity. Preliminary Vickers microhardness testing, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy will be used to assess microstructural and property changes by comparing post-processed and as-sprayed samples. Based on these results, systems of interest will be further explored. This will include mechanical testing, scanning electron microscopy, and, if necessary, more advanced techniques to explain fundamental material behavior.
