Replacement Materials for IVD Boats
Our ME/MSE Senior Design team has collaborated with Cametoid Technologies to improve the reliability and efficiency of the Ion Vapor Deposition (IVD) process used to apply protective aluminum coatings on aerospace and defense components. The ceramic boats used in this process operate at extremely high temperatures and are prone to cracking and degradation, which reduces coating quality and increases maintenance costs. Our team has analyzed the heating and cooling cycle of the boats to understand the causes of failure and explore alternative high-temperature materials that can improve durability and performance. The goal was to extend component lifespan, reduce downtime, and support a more sustainable and resilient manufacturing process for Cametoid’s IVD systems.
Our team collaborated with Materials Science & Engineering 8 on this project.
