Micro Water Entry Testbed
This project, sponsored by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, focuses on the development of a fixed-wing UAV-based platform for controlled water entry experiments. The objective of the project is to design, build, and test a small unmanned aerial vehicle capable of autonomously flying to a specified location and performing a controlled dive into the water while surviving the impact of entry. The project begins with the selection and assembly of an off-the-shelf UAV platform. The design will be modified to increase the capabilities to autonomous flight, and a water entry maneuver. Initially manual, later autonomous flight tests will be conducted to evaluate system performance and establish baseline flight characteristics. Based on the results of these tests, the vehicle design will be iteratively refined to improve navigation accuracy, flight stability, and structural durability during water impact.
