Uniformity of Temperature and Airflow in a Cold Storage Room
The goal of this project is improving the temperature and airflow uniformity within an apple cold storage unit to help optimize the long-term preservation of apples and prevent spoilage. With the collaboration of the UConn Department of Plant Science and Precision Combustion Inc. (PCI), the team commenced an investigation into the structure of an orchard’s cold storage unit to analyze the airflow within. With the investigation completed, the team designed implementable modifications to improve airflow within the cold storage unit. To understand the causes of uneven airflow, the impact of crate design and placement, baffle placement and fan placement were all studied to understand their effects.
