Tunable Metamaterials for Controlling Waves Using Bubbles
This project investigates an optimum design for bubble curtains, an existing technology used to mitigate acoustic emissions from underwater construction activities. Traditional bubble curtains use perforated hoses with constant air supply, and varying orifice sizes; while effective at high frequencies, current data shows they offer little to no protection at lower frequencies. This project aims to design a bubble curtain that provides greater acoustic attenuation across the entire frequency spectrum. This will be accomplished through a metamaterial design of bubbles, where low frequencies are targeted through resonance and higher frequencies through scattering. The design was developed by modeling bubble dynamics and acoustic responses using analytical, numerical, and experimental methods.
