SCAM SHIELD

Our Senior Design project is focused on building an AI-powered platform that helps seniors identify and avoid scams in real time. We chose to serve older adults (60+) because they face disproportionately high risk: in 2023, they reported over $3.4 billion in losses to Online Scams (FBI, 2023). The platform is powered by a BERT-based machine learning model with a Hugging Face Bert classifier, and it is specifically trained to detect scam messages that are among the most threatening to seniors. The model is tuned for the top scam types identified in the FBI’s 2023 Elder Fraud Report : -Investment scams (e.g., Ponzi schemes, “guaranteed return” schemes) -Tech support scams -Business Email Compromise (BEC) -Confidence / Romance scams -Government Impersonation Scams How it works: A user (senior) can copy and paste suspicious text or upload a screenshot of a potentially fraudulent message. The BERT model analyzes the message and returns: -A scam likelihood score (visualized with a clear score bar) -An explanation written in simple, non-technical language, so that seniors can easily understand why the message might be a scam -Recommended actions (for example: block the sender, report it, ignore, or escalate) In addition to real-time detection, the platform offers a training and education section designed specifically for seniors. It includes short lessons on common scam patterns, warning signs, and practical tips to stay safe online. Our mission is to build a platform that is intuitive, supportive, and empowering, giving seniors a trustworthy companion for navigating today’s digital landscape. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
