For our project, we were given a ceremonial Pyrodex cannon with a ½” bore and asked to gather data about the cannon. The data we gathered included peak noise levels, rollback distance, and peak acceleration. We examined how factors like charge size and packing pressure affected the data. We used this data to generate a model of the cannon to approximate the factor of safety on the cannon. Using this data, we constructed a ¾” bore cannon that is 50% louder than the original. We then performed the same analysis on the new cannon, finding peak rollback, noise levels, acceleration, and the corresponding factor of safety.
